Saskatchewan to build $1.4B clean coal power plant
One day after the federal government gave Saskatchewan nearly $250 million to put toward carbon capture, the province announced it will rebuild and re-power a coal-fired power generator near Estevan, Sask. The demonstration project will produce 100 megawatts for SaskPower, while reducing the publicly owned power utility's emissions by one million tonnes annually.

TransAlta signs agreement with technology partner Alstom to develop carbon capture and storage project in Alberta, Canada
TransAlta Corporation and Alstom, a global leader in power generation technology will work together to develop a large scale CO2 capture and storage (CCS) facility in Alberta, Canada. The companies will test Alstrom’s proprietary Chilled Ammonia Process at one of TransAlta’s coal-fired generating stations west of Edmonton and reduce current CO2 emissions by one million tonnes per year

Goldsource Confirms Saskatchewan Coal Discovery Analytical Results and Coal Rankings Announced
Analysis of 47 coal samples from two core holes indicate the presence of a 22.6 metre thick coal seam in an area approximately 50 kilometres north of Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. The coal, ranked as High Volatile Bituminous C and Sub-Bituminous A, has excellent thermal properties. The seam is approximately 80 metres below the surface and is accessible by both road and rail.

Backgrounder
Coal mining in Saskatchewan began in 1857. Most of the coal produced in Saskatchewan is lignite, which is a lower quality coal with relatively low heating value. However, these coals are also low in sulphur. Saskatchewan produced 10.5 million tonnes of coal in 2007, most of which was used within the province to generate electricity.
Partner Profile
The Coal Association of Canada represents companies engaged in the exploration, development, use and transportation of coal. Its members include major coal producers and coal-using utilities, the railroads and ports that ship coal, industry suppliers of goods and services, and municipalities that have an interest in furthering the objectives of the Coal Association.
Learning Resources
Energy Literacy Series – Coal interactive module examines coal, the world’s most abundant fossil fuel. Because it is widespread in Canada, approximately 15 per cent of our electricity is produced by coal-fired generating plants.
Clean Coal: A Compendium of Canada's Participation
With the recent rise in both crude oil and natural gas prices, coal is gaining in importance as an energy source. However, burning coal results in emissions of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Technology is currently available to address some of these concerns and Natural Resources Canada has produced a compendium of current work and active participants in clean coal technology.
