Fuel Cells –ironically, an alternative to fossil fuels
Fuel cells aren’t new. More than 160 years ago, Sir William Grove, knowing that electricity could separate water into hydrogen and oxygen, combined water and hydrogen to see if the reaction would produce electricity. Presto! The fuel cell was born, but was soon bypassed with the advent of the fossil fuel age.

Fuel cell technology really takes off
Boeing has developed and successfully tested a manned airplane powered by hydrogen fuel cells. The plane used power from batteries and fuel cells to climb to 1,000 metres, then switched to fuels cells only for a 20-minute level flight in each of three tests of the technology.

Fuel cells to help transport Olympians
As part of British Columbia’s Hydrogen Highway (24KB PDF), hydrogen fuel cell powered buses will help deliver fans to Olympic venues during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic games. The buses will have a range of 500 kilometres and a top speed of 90 kilometres per hour.

Backgrounder
The BC Hydrogen Highway is a showcase for hydrogen technology and implementation – not just fuel cell vehicles but stationary, portable and micro-fuel cell applications.
Backgrounder
During the spring and summer of 2004, more than 60 experts from government, academia and the hydrogen and energy industries were involved in two workshops out of which came Hydrogen Systems (2.4MB PDF), an in-depth discussion paper which provides an analysis of Canada’s current hydrogen infrastructure and addresses the major challenges for further development of hydrogen systems in Canada.
Partner Profile
Hydrogen & Fuel Cells Canada, the national industry association, is playing a key role in accelerating Canada's world-leading hydrogen and fuel cell industry.
