New turbine powers up Alberta
Natural gas provides about 38 per cent of Alberta’s electricity. A new 43.4-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired turbine is now in operation at EPCOR’s Clover Bar Energy Centre. The new high-efficiency units use 85% less water per megawatt hour (MWh) and produce about 70% less nitrogen oxides per MWh of electricity generated at full capacity, compared to the old Clover Bar plant.

Saskatchewan to build $1.4B clean coal power plant
One day after the federal government gave Saskatchewan nearly $250 million to put toward carbon capture, the province announced it will rebuild and re-power a coal-fired power generator near Estevan, Sask. The demonstration project will produce 100 megawatts for SaskPower, while reducing the publicly owned power utility's emissions by one million tonnes annually.

Natural gas project will help power a growing economy
About 68 per cent of Saskatchewan’s installed capacity of electricity generation is thermal fired – about 51 percent by coal and17 percent by natural gas. To meet Saskatchewan’s growing need for electricity, SaskPower plans to add about 100 megawatts of natural gas-fired generation to the provincial grid by 2010. Natural gas produces up to 50 per cent less carbon dioxide (CO2) per megawatt hour than conventional coal-fired generation.

Backgrounder
The Ontario Energy Board is the regulator of Ontario's natural gas and electricity industries. The Board reports to the Ontario legislature through the Minister of Energy, but carries out its functions and responsibilities independently.
