Ontario Government lifts moratorium on offshore wind power projects
The Ontario government is now processing applications for offshore wind energy projects submitted prior to the 14-month moratorium and is preparing to accept new applications.

Canadian Wind Energy Association responds to comments made by Alberta Premier Stelmach regarding wind turbine related bird fatalities
The President of the Canadian Wind Energy Association has written a letter to Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach following the premier’s claims that the deaths of hundreds of ducks on an oilsands tailings pond was insignificant compared to those caused by wind turbines. In fact the number of turbine-related bird fatalities is much less.

British Columbia Offshore Wind Energy Project Another Step Closer to Realization
Despite having great potential for wind energy, British Columbia has yet to build a commercial wind project. The NaiKun Windfarm, a 700MW wind power project proposed for the Hecate Strait between Haida Gwaii and Prince Rupert may be the first.

Backgrounder
Coal mining in Saskatchewan began in 1857. Most of the coal produced in Saskatchewan is lignite, which is a lower quality coal with relatively low heating value. However, these coals are also low in sulphur. Saskatchewan produced 10.5 million tonnes of coal in 2007, most of which was used within the province to generate electricity.

The Canadian Wind Atlas, a national atlas that maps out the country's wind resources through a database of high-resolution wind statistics makes Canada the first large-area country in the world to have a comprehensive wind atlas for its entire territory.
Partner Profile
The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) was formed in 1984 to support the development and application of all aspects of the wind energy industry in Canada. CanWEA works on behalf of its members to create a supportive public policy environment for the wind energy industry through policy research and advocacy initiatives at both the federal and provincial level.
Federal/Provincial Initiatives on Wind Energy
The Canadian Wind Energy Association has compiled a list of federal government and provincial government wind energy initiatives (60KB PDF) across Canada and provides updates on the status of each.
